I hope everyone had a great holiday and Happy New Year! We have lots of exciting things to look forward to and keep us busy in the new year.
January 10th: Creative Maddness: We will be having a lady named Lisa come to our class to do some special painting projects with us tomorrow. Please make sure that your child is wearing something that can get messy!
Math: In math we are still working on Measurement. We have learned many math goals and are working on perimeter and area this week. We learned that perimeter is the distance around an object.

We are focusing on making sure we add a title, ingredients, and steps to our work. We are also focusing on writing full sentences, commas, colons, and periods.
Reading: We are continuing to set reading goals in Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expanding Vocabulary.
Movement Breaks: These are very important to our learning in the classroom. Each day we try to do some quick movements to keep our bodies and our brains working. Today we learned: Land, Sea, Air, Concentration, and I Spy! If you have any cool ideas for us we’d love to hear about them.
Words: We all have new words this week. They should be in our agendas. Keep praciticng those words at home each night.
Have a good week,

Here is a little update of what you can expect in our classroom this week.
Monday October 24th: P.A. Day
Wednesday October 25th: Picture Retake Day
Gym (Day 4): This coming Tuesday (18th)
Library (Day 5): This coming Wednesday (19th)
Word Works: Hopefully everyone is starting to get the hang of the Words homework each night. Last week I found a fun website on readwritethink.org called Alphabet Organizer which I added to our blog, under Student Links. If you would like to spend one or two nights a week sorting your words into the Alphabet Organizer instead of doing a Sort and Say that is fine. Just print off your alphabet when you are done so I know you did it. Word test will be on Wednesday this week.
Math: This week we will be moving into Sorting and Organizing objects based on their attributes or what they look like. We will also be talking about cool questions we can come up with to help collect data and by the end of the week we will hopefully be making our own graphs.
Writing: We have complete our first piece of published writing on our reports. Now we will continue to explore different styles of report writing and create our own. I will also be meeting to conference with students and set goals for different areas of their writing.
Reading: We are continuing to set goals for our reading as well. Ask your child what their reading goal is. Does it have to do with Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency or Expanding Vocabulary (CAFE)?
Problem Solving: We have been working very hard on solving problems in our classroom both math problems and other. For math problems we are focusing on making sure our problem has Pictures, Numbers, Math Words, and an Answer. We have also been talking about how important it is to pick a math tool before we start solving a math problem. The math tools we have learned about so far are: 100′s Chart, Number Line, Linking Cubes.
Hope you have a good week,
Mrs. Ozerkevich

Fall Fair: Fall fair will take place on Friday. We are very excited and will practice our marching one more time tomorrow. Please make sure that you pack a paper bagged lunch for your child and do not send agendas, school bags, or lunch bags to school that day unless your child is going home from school at 3:30.
Food Drive: Thank-you to those who have participated in the food drive. At the end of today we are at 56 food items in our class. We do have a goal of 100 and we have tomorrow to bring some in! Way to go grade 2!
Math:
In math we have been working on place value. We have also been practicing using some very helpful math tools like the 100″s chart, number line, base 10 blocks and linking cubes. This week we will be continuing to work on numbers to 50. We have also been practicing our problem solving and talking about how important it is to use pictures, numbers, math words, and an answer when we are problem solving. We have some great math minds in grade 2.
Writing/Reading:
In our writing we are working on reports. We have been using the national geographic site for kids to do our research. We learned that it is very important to come up with good questions to help us find good information. You can look forward to reading our reports in the next month or so. If you would like to check out student links on our class blog you will be able to click directly on this site. During our shared reading time we have been talking about the different characteristics of reports after reading about cool animals on national geographic for kids.
Learning Skills: Today we introduced Collaboration and talked about how it is importan to listen to others ideas and be positive with each other when working as a group. We will keep practicing this very important skill through the rest of the week. Next week we will be doing Responsibility.
Miss LePlume: We are very fortunate to have Miss LePlume in our class right now every Monday and Tuesday until November when she will be with us every day that month.
Volunteers: If you would like to volunteer in the class let me know days and times that work for you and we would love to have you. The best time for our class is from 9:00-1:00.
Communication: The agenda is the best way to get a hold of me if you would like to send me a message. Agendas are checked every day.
Thank-you,
